Training and Support > Introduction

Warwick & Leamington Beekeepers sees training of those new to beekeeping and the encouragement of the more experienced beekeeper to keep up to date with best practice as one of its key roles. This is because poor husbandry can result in colony losses or diseases within the bee population, which is both bad for bees and for neighbouring beekeepers.

For anyone intrigued about honey bees and beekeeping and who may be considering taking up the craft, we annually offer a one day "Beekeeping Appreciation Course"  This will next be offered in May 2012

Our "Introduction to Beekeeping Course" is very popular: one evening per week for six weeks.  Course members joining the Branch are then provided with a mentor and when feasible supplied with a starter swarm.  This will next be offered in January 2012

Even though the above courses are now over for 2011, there are still possibilities for starting to learn beekeeping in 2011.  Please complete our enquiry form for more information

After their first season, novice beekeepers are offered a chance to review their progress and encouraged to take the BBKA Basic Assessment

Warwick & Leamington Beekeepers responds to interest from members in specialist areas: A skep making event was recently concluded and events concerning candlemaking, queen rearing, microscopy and morphometry are being considered.

Promoting good husbandry practice is a theme of the Branch, which provides a book and DVD reference library, updating lectures, and publicizes learning opportunities generally.

Warwickshire Beekeepers' Association offers a more advanced beekeeping theory course annually and the BBKA has a series of "Modules" which ultimately lead to the qualification of "Master Beekeeper"

As a beekeeper, training and updating are a constant process.  By joining Warwick & Leamington Beekeepers, you will have a continuous opportunity through publications, lectures, Branch Members' meetings and the use of the library to keep up-to-date with best practice
