Spectacular Swarms
- If you set up a bait hive in your apiary, try to get hold of a couple of old foundation frames to put inside because swarms are attracted by the aroma of used wax. (David Stott)
- Though "Fabispray" is useful for masking the odour left on a branch by a swarm, it is also possible, using strong gloves, to use crushed nettle leaves to do the same and so deter bees from flying back to the branch. (Brian Milward)
- Put a second brood box, separated by a queen excluder, over the brood chamber containing a newly housed prime swarm, thereby using the swarm's natural predisposition to pull fresh foundation which you can then remove, seal to protect from wax moth, and store ready for a nucleus or a bailey comb change. (Carolyn Mann)
- Spray a swarm with a light mist of sugar water to tighten the cluster before knocking it into a skep or cardboard box. (Roger Wilkes)
