Sensible Sites
- Avoid using woodchip below the hive as a means of weed control, because it seems to attract wasps. (Margery Blower)
- To help prevent back-ache use high stands or spare boxes beneath the hive floor to raise the brood box to a decent working height. Should the roof become somewhat inaccessible as the number of supers increase, simply carry a plastic milk/bottle crate for standing upon. (Brian Milward)
- A spare hive left in the apiary not only acts as a bait hive for swarms but can also be used as a seat or table when writing up records. (Brian Milward)
- If you use alighting boards keep an eye out for bluetits and robins during the winter months. They tap the boards and wait to seize the guard bees that respond to the disturbance. They can rapidly decimate the population during winter and as in the case of woodpeckers, they are persistent offenders. (Ian Homer)
